I graduated from Otago Polytech in 1982 after completing a diploma in Fine Arts and a year on the full time ceramics course.
Moved to Nelson in 1983 and worked for a year in Ruby Bay with Chris Hinkley and Dave Walker. Spent two years in Europe after this, returning in 1986 and worked at Zenith Pottery with Chris Hinkley and Bob Heatherbell before Chris and I set up our pottery here in Weka Road Mariri in 1994.
My work has always been based on the wheel as I enjoy the process of throwing and putting together of the pieces at leather hard stage.
For the first ten years most of my work was high fired stoneware, fired in a gas kiln with traditional glazes. Changing markets and technology has seen me move to lower fired white clays and brighter colours.
Lately I am enjoying a return to high fired clays and glazes, with an emphasis on form over decoration, with simple glazes and texture.
