MANUKA POTTERY.....CHARLES SHAW

Like many Potters I was introduced to clay through evening classes (circa 1970)
I enjoyed using hand made domestic ware and was excited by the possibilities of an independant, creative life style.

After spending a couple of years on my OE visiting and working with potters in the US, Canada, and London, I returned to Nelson, and spent 5 years working for Lairds at Waimea Pottery.
The transition to self employment went smoothly due to the sound training I received, and the ready market for well made domestic ware.

Over the years I have taught evening classes, an experience that I enjoyed, and a catalyst to embark on a teaching diploma in '94.  Since then I have dispersed my potting with periods as a technology teacher in schools in the top of the South Island.

My work at present is moving away from purely utilitarian, to include decorative elements and materials other than clay, however I intend to continue producing some domestic ware for the true believers.
I am currently producing Ceramic and steel pukeko, various forms with crystalline glazes, finely crafted tea sets, bowls, jugs, and other domestic ware.
